Family car with a lot of trunk space: What should be considered?

The load volume in liters is usually the first criterion when looking for family cars with a large trunk. Important for practical loading and unloading in everyday life is the variability of the interior, including the rear seat. On many models, you can fold down the rear seat either completely or partially. For example, it is possible to fold down only the right seat or only the left two seats. The advantage: With this "asymmetrical division" you have different loading capacities for different transport tasks - from driving with the children to picking up a piece of furniture.

Other practical equipment for families:

  • Luggage compartment cover: It prevents objects from flying forward, for example during emergency braking, and leading to injuries. In addition, you can't see what's being transported in the trunk.
  • Illuminated trunk: So you have everything in view even in poor light conditions and the little teddy bear won't get lost.
  • Low loading sill: It makes it easier to load and unload heavy objects, such as beverage crates or prams.
  • Fixing the load: Lashing options such as eyelets, for example for the dog crate, offer a secure hold.
  • Through-loading option for long items: It allows you to stow skis or a surfboard.

Small cars with a large trunk

To be a real spatial talent, you often don't even need a large exterior. Even small cars often offer practical use of space and make the most of the available possibilities. A particularly practical small car with a large trunk, for example, is the Honda Jazz with up to 1,205 liters of storage space with the rear seat folded down. The Seat Ibiza also offers plenty of space for a small car, up to 355 liters fit in the rear of the Spaniard. If you fold down the rear seat, even 1,165 liters go into the trunk.

E-cars with a large trunk

Electric cars are also slowly getting models with more usable trunk. Among the electric cars, for example, there is the Mercedes EQV with a whopping 1,030 liters of trunk volume; in the XL version, it is even up to 1,410 liters. The Tesla Model Y with 854 liters of storage space or the Å koda Enyaq with 585 liters can also shine in comparison. E-cars offer a great advantage in that the battery is usually installed under the load floor, creating more space in the interior. However, the higher vehicle weight can have a negative effect on the payload.

The Honda Jazz has been available exclusively as a full hybrid since 2020.

It's not just the sheer size of the vehicle that matters, as the Honda Jazz impressively proves. Even in the latest generation, which has been available since 2023, the Jazz once again shines with the familiar Magic Seats: rear seats in which both the backrest can be folded forward and the seats can be folded up. The trunk volume is similarly variable, as it offers 304 liters in normal condition, 844 liters window-high with the rear bench folded down and a whole 1,205 liters roof-high. The latter is a lot for a car that is only just over four meters long.

Hybrid technology, which has been used less frequently in recent years, an electric motor supports the combustion engine and can also allow the vehicle to drive purely electrically. However, it cannot be charged from external sources compared to the plug-in hybrid system. A gasoline motor and an electric motor together produce 90 kW (122 hp) in the small car with a large trunk. If you want more of the Jazz, you can take a look at the Crosstar: It is longer, higher and has more ground clearance. In addition, it has roof rails and, curiously, water-repellent seat covers in its range.

Kia Sorento: Large SUV, large trunk

The facelift of the fourth generation of the Sorento was launched in early 2024.

The Kia Sorento gets bigger with the facelift, which tall people can be happy about - front and rear, even with a height of over 1.90 meters, you don't have to be afraid of sitting cramped. The car with large trunk and headroom has grown by four centimeters in wheelbase, which makes the interior larger and more comfortable. There are five to seven seats on board, depending on your wishes, of which the rear rows can be folded down to form a continuous loading area. This allows the already impressive trunk volume of 697 liters (roof-high with the rear bench folded down: 2,085 liters) to be significantly expanded.

Viewed from the outside, the Sorento looks modern, characterized by a headlight look reminiscent of electric group brothers such as the EV9. Under the hood, there is little change from its predecessor, with a choice of full hybrids, plug-in hybrids and diesel variants with front- or all-wheel drive. The equipment will be more extensive from 2024. For the interior, new highlights such as digital exterior mirrors or massage seats are available. The assistance systems have also been expanded: a radar system now supports functions such as emergency brake assist, automatic distance control and the new cross traffic detection. The car with a large trunk is available from about 53,000 euros starting price. If you want the variant with the largest range of features, called "Platinum", you have to pay at least 64,000 euros in the case of a cash purchase. The predecessor of the fourth generation is also impressive: The Sorento is suitable for everyday use and as an off-road vehicle even before the facelift. The all-wheel-drive variants in particular shine with the mud and sand modes in rough terrain. The Kia Sorento (MQ4) is available from around 20,000 euros as a used car from mobile.de.

The Citroën ë-Berlingo got a facelift in 2024.

Large selection, combustion engines or alternative drives, different sizes - there is something for everyone at the Citroën Berlingo. As a combustion engine, it is available as an MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) or panel van, and since the third generation it has also been available purely electrically as ë-Berlingo. The electric version is available as a size M with five seats and 750 liters of trunk volume. If you need more space, you can opt for the XL version: This is about 30 centimeters longer and offers up to seven seats and a trunk volume of 1,050 liters. In both variants of the car with a large trunk, the rear bench can be folded down to expand the storage space.

The electric high-roof station wagon is powered by an electric motor on the front axle that produces 100 kW (136 hp). The battery with a net capacity of 40 kWh provides a range of 339 to 345 kilometres, depending on the variant. An Isofix bracket is only available on the rear seat, but the standard equipment is already impressive in the basic M Plus version: air conditioninglane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, light and rain sensor, parking aid (rear) and an intelligent speed assistant are already available in the ë-Berlingo with many other features. The ë-Berlingo is available from around 37,000 euros new price. The third-generation predecessor, built from 2021, is also available as an electric car, but with a smaller trunk volume. It is only 571 liters in the smaller M size. At mobile.de, the ë-Berlino is available as a used car from around 21,000 euros.

The VW ID.7 produces 286 hp as a Pro or Pro S.

While the Passat Variant is known as a classic everyday companion with a combustion engine, there is also an electric station wagon counterpart in the form of the VW ID.7 Tourer. The car with a large trunk has been on the market since October 2023 and delivers solid values: 605 liters fit in the trunk - with the rear seat folded down, it is even 1,714 liters. Despite the large battery, the ID.7 does not have to hide from the competition in terms of storage space. On the contrary, because a BMW i5 Touring, for example, only holds 570 to 1,700 liters and is only available north of 70,000 euros.

The range of the electric car with a large trunk is impressive: In the Pro, with a battery capacity of 77 kWh according to WLTP, it is 605 kilometers, the Pro S has 9 kWh more in the battery and thus comes to 690 kilometers (WLTP). This is an impressive figure. Vehicles that exceed this range, such as the Mercedes EQS or the Tesla Model S, are much more expensive. The standard equipment of the Pro is comprehensive: LED headlights, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, evasive assistant, a parking aid (front and rear with reversing camera) and much more are available at no extra charge. Prices start at around 54,000 euros for the VW ID.7 Tourer Pro.

Since June 2024, the ID.7 has also been on the market as a GTX with 340 hp and an additional engine on the front axle.

Å koda Superb Combi: Plenty of space in the mid-range station wagon

The Å koda Superb Combi fits almost 2,000 litres with the rear bench folded down.

The trunk in the Å koda Superb Combi is as helpful and practical as the parking heater in winter. The "Simply Clever" concept, as the brand motto goes, includes lamps and hooks on the sides, a boot cover, a compartment under the loading area as well as several nets and so-called cargo elements for securing loads. The latter look like corner pieces of a box and can be placed freely on the loading area or stowed underneath. The figures of the Czech vehicle with the large trunk are also impressive: The trunk volume is 690 liters, with the rear seats folded down it is even 1,920 liters.

The fourth-generation all-rounder is available with gasoline, diesel and hybrid engines that deliver between 150 and 265 hp. If you often drive in trailer mode, the 2.0 TDI 4×4 is a good choice: it tows up to 2,200 kilograms (twelve percent braked). For economical drivers, for example, the 1.5 TSI mHEV models with mild hybrid system are suitable. These have an average total consumption of 5.3 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers. Alternatively, the 204 hp iV plug-in hybrid is also an option, which can cover 124 kilometres (according to WLTP) purely electrically. As standard, the current Superb comes with air conditioning, a ten-inch touchscreen, LED headlights and assistance systems such as Lane Keeping or City Emergency Brake Assist.

Cars with a large trunk for strollers

Important for many who are looking for a family car is the possibility of easily accommodating the stroller. In addition, there should be space for additional luggage in addition to the stroller. The ADAC has created the following criteria for orientation precisely for these requirements:

  • Interior width in the trunk: at least 95 centimeters
  • Height of the trunk opening: at least 62 centimeters
  • Boot capacity roof height: at least 600 litres
  • Loading sill height: maximum 70 centimetres

Trunk for dogs - this is what matters

Important for all animal passengers: There should be a net or similar between the trunk and the rest of the interior. This prevents the animal from being thrown through the interior in the event of an accident.

The beloved four-legged friends should also be safe on the road. If dogs are stored in a transport box in the trunk, it is essential to have lashing options. This prevents the box from moving back and forth while driving. For larger dogs with correspondingly larger boxes, so-called high-roof station wagons have proven to be practical - such as the Citroën Berlingo XL, the Peugeot Rifter or the Dacia Dokker. Equally important: The trunk should not be separated from the rest of the interior. This way, you will immediately notice if the animal is not feeling well during the journey and if it makes itself felt, for example, by whining.

Cars with a large trunk for wheelchair transport

If the driver or one of the passengers needs a wheelchair, there should of course be room for one in the car. A car with a large trunk for a wheelchair must first of all have a large loading opening. This makes it easy to load the wheelchair. Vans and MPVs such as the VW Touran or the Citroën Berlingo XL are suitable here.

Station wagon, SUV or van: Which type of vehicle should it be?

If you only pay attention to the trunk size, both station wagons and SUVs come into question. Depending on the respective model, either the station wagon or the SUV is ahead in terms of load volume. There are other factors that come into play when choosing a vehicle, especially for families: station wagons are usually cheaper to maintain and insure; SUVs, on the other hand, are more expensive overall and also have higher running costs. The advantage of the SUV: You can enjoy the higher seating position including all-round visibility and, due to the solid construction, you get safety advantages, for example in the event of a crash.

For large families with three or more children, a van is best. This convinces with enough space and a very variably usable interior. Many models also have a third row of seats, which makes it possible to take more children and dogs with you. Movable, foldable and removable seats make different types of transport possible – from transporting a group of children to loading the surfboard or equipment for a ski trip to a holiday with five suitcases.
